A few days ago I realized my headlight wasn't working. I got home and put the bike away and noticed that the backlight for the gauges wasn't working either. I have .01 volts DC on the brown wire and the yellow and green wires, and my ground is good. Since I have aftermarket signals that don't work as running lights, I used the good 12v source coming from the blue wire that is supposed to power them to get me going for a while.

The problem is that now my headlight stays on when I'm cranking the engine and I still have no backlight for my gauges. I am assuming that whatever mechanism that shuts the headlight off while cranking the starter is stuck or damaged. Where is it? In the starter? In the starter switch? My service manual is helpful for wiring diagrams and color codes, but it doesn't seem to be much help.

    Thanks.

This may or may not help, but on my XJ1100, the 'kill' circuit for the headlight during cranking runs through the starter button. You may want to take a look at the switch itself as well as the connections.

I haven't had a chance to look yet, but hopefully that's it. Thanks.

That happened to a bike I worked on before.

I belive there is a RELAY that shuts the headlight off while the starter is engaged. find that relay and check it...

My 82 has a switch in the starter button. I did the same thing you did however. Also, my bike has a computer board that showed signs of burning so I signed off my electrical woes to that. PO did the fuse panel upgrade which I appreciate. Judging by the rest of the work he did on the bike however I imagine he messed that up somehow and burned out the board. So if you have that board i'd pop it off and check it for burns and/or water damage.
