    Just picked up a good deal on a 85 Maxim X . Thanks Artie
    Just a few questions, I have not had time to look through my XJ CD.
    1) Where in the @#%#$ is the fuse box, I can' find it
    2) What is the oil filter part number
    3) What is the spark plug number.
    I am hoping the local auto parts store has them ,but you never know.
    4) This is my first water coold bike, any special maintenance. Other than clean and flush the radiator.

    The main fuse is in a small box under the seat if you ever need to get to it.

    Make sure to test the cooling system. Mine was not operational when I got it. The fan should kick-on when it reaches the very last mark. If it doesn't see my post for Maxim X overheating for troubleshooting tips.

    If you do have to pull the thermostat housing, it is a giant PITA. While not technically difficult, it's just a pain.

    If you want to go with the K&N oil filter, here's a link.

    Chacal may have them too. I got this before I started getting parts from him.

    I'm not at my home system, so I can't say what the Yamaha part number is on the oil filter; however, I believe it uses the same as all the other XJs, which means you can go down to your nearest auto parts store and look for a Fram CH6003 filter. Comes with the o-rings, too.

    What I did with my X right off the bat was install the spin-on filter kit that Chacal sells; that way one can use standard automotive filters instead of having to possibly have the store special order the other ones for you.

    If you search the forums, you'll find the links that I've posted for flushing the coolant, cleaning the carbs and installing the spin-on kit, although he's changed the kit since I put mine on.

    Schmuck, how much was the kit? that's sweet, and thank you for the fram oil filter #. It wasn't bad when the dealer was getting $5, but I just got one the other day and they were $11! highway r@p3!! thanks man. and thanks for calling that guy from cl for me. Nothing panned out on my end either.

    About 50ish at the time, his catalog message thread at:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... rt=15.html

    has them currently running $55-67, depending on which flavor you choose. I went with the 1284PL, with the Purolator filter. The one with the full-size Fram filter won't fit between the header pipes on the X.

    FYI, the Yamaha part numbers for comparison:

    700X = 1L9-13440-91-00
    750J = 1L9-13441-11-00

    I never figured I would have to remove screws to get at the fuses, but I know now. I picked up a Fram oil filter at the parts store and some new plugs. Got to clean the carbs and hopefully it will run. This bike has pod filters on it, not my favorits setup. Does anyone know what the stock main jet size is? I can't read the size on the ones installed, they are a little beat up. I need to get new ones and with the stock exhaust I'll need 1 or 2 sizes larger.

    Thanks Joe
    If i remember correct the next size would be 107.5, and 110, is that right? Don't they step in 2.5 increments? The mains for both my XS/XJ do.

    I haven't had to do anything with mine, but I believe you are correct that they come in 2.5mm increments.

    Got it running today, changed the oil, filter , plugs, flushed cooling system, cleaned the carbs. It started right up and ran great. The alternator is not charging , need to replace the stator. The only concern I have is a rattle in the enging . Its only there when the engine is cold and at idle. Once its warmed up it mostly goes away, goes away also when the engine is reved. Anybody got ant ideas.

    Before you replace the stator, check the brushes and the regulator first!

    Could it be the hydraulic cam chain tensioner?

    +1 on the cam chain tensioner. search for the way to correct it, it's pretty easy. Mine sounds the same way, I just haven't gotten to rectify it as of yet.

    I'll check the cam chain tonight, thanks. I know the stator is bad, it is shorted to ground. The brushes look good and the rotor ohms out at 2.5 I don't know the range for it though. The only thing out of place is the stator, 0 ohms to stator housing on all 3 wires.

    Don't be, I can hardly move in my workshop and keeping it all running takes time. But what else do I have to do.

    Mlew, your rotor resistance should be as follows:

    Checking alternator stators: the resistance across each pair (w1 to w2, w1 to w3, and w2 to w3) of the three white wires (white1, white2, and white 3) at the connector should be as follows:

    0.46 ohms +/- 10% for all XJ650, all XJ700, all XJ750, and XJ900RK models.

    what is the resistance on the rotor, mine is 2.5 ohms, the stator is shorted to ground.

    Checking alternator rotors: the resistance across the two lead wires (usually red and green) at the connector should be as follows. Note that worn or damaged alternator brushes can affect these readings, as can "dirty" copper commutator strips on the rotor face (where the brushes contact the rotor):

    4.5 ohms +/- 10% for all XJ550 models.

    4.0 ohms +/- 10% for all XJ650, all XJ700, all XJ750, XJ900RK, and XJ1100 models.
