I'm concerned about skipping a tooth on the crank when pulling the cams out to change shims (went thru that recently with an FJR). Would it be a good idea to cable tie each sprocket to the cam chain and also secure the chain to the backbone prior to loosening the tensioner? Then loosen the CCT and simultaneously tighten the tie to the backbone to eliminate slack?

If you tie the sprockets to the chain you should be good; dunno about tying it off to the "backbone" (I assume you mean the rear tensioner.)

I would also "fail safe" it with some small dabs of paint; I prefer Testor's (model airplane/car) enamel in white or bright yellow. If you clean off the chain and sprockets with some solvent on a rag, you can apply some "indexing marks" of your own before disassembly.

I was referring to the frame when I said backbone.

I am at the point now to make some index marks....just came in the house to get the white-out bottle. I'll do chain to sprocket, sprocket to cam (x2)

Does the cam chain guide prevent the chain from jumping on the crank sprocket? I don't see any way to get to it.

Another question, in my haste to get a look at those microscopic shims I neglected to notice which way the cam chain tensioner goes....do the ratchet teeth on the plunger go up or down....I'm assuming down but just not certain....thanks.
