So, the POs had done some significant damage/modifications to the wiring harness and I decided to give up and replace it. Removed the old harness when the new arrived and then went to install the new. Suddenyly I notice that the harness has a bunch of terminals for the fuse box attached and it shouldn't. Finding the label on the harness I do a quick search and ... sure enough, this relatively decent wiring harness (nigh 35 years old) isn't for a Maxim X but rather an 79 XS650.

Now I have a wiring harness I can't use and a dismantled somewhat hacked up harness. Is there anyone who by chance has a useable condition harness for an XJ700X ('85) who can afford to part with it at a reasonable price ( for someone who can barely rub 2 nickels together)? Second, the relay attached labeled 41R-71 (turn signal maybe which mounts right under the fuel tank?) is toast. The device and the wiring harness plug are melted together and part of the module has separated open and has bare contacts exposed, so I am going to have to get one of those as well ...

I hope one of you out there can have mercy on me. I am so bummed. I thought I was finally done.

do you think the old one is repairable? i mean i had a LOT of redneck rigged wiring from my p.o. and i just rebuilt from there.... sorry not to completely answer your question, just trying to save you some money.
i even had to wire in a flasher unit and starter wires completely away from the stock components....
Idk, the harness isnt that complex if you have a flasher relay and working handle controls...

I have no understanding of electrical diagrams and such. I'd say it was Greek to me, except that I have studied that ... Makes such things rather difficult for me. :-( Something I'd like to rectify at some point.

At first glance, it does appear overwhelming.

Just spend the time you would use tracking down the right harness and research it. You'll get it. In the end you have done yourself a favor and can hold your head up!

Ha, build yourself the proper harness from the one you received. Might as well get something out of it!

Finding one isn't so much overwhelming, but a real let down. In some ways I am ready to throw in the towel. After all this work and prep, anticipating *finally being done, only to have it snatched away ... Build it from the one I received? No, I am quite certain I would be better off trying to repair the one I started with. I am just very leery of trying to redo wiring stuff. Everything I have tried like that comes out looking pretty messy and not something I'd want to risk my life on. :-(

I know its just going to take more time, but I am so wanting to get back on the road. My daughters have taken both of my cars and I end up being the one stuck all the time. It bites.
