Just wondering if anybody could tell me what the 4th thru the 8th digit should be on a 1981 xj750 Seca? The paint was the brilliant red. I'm trying to read the number off of the stem, but some of the numbers have been rubbed off.

    I know this: JYA006 . . . . .B2012656

So this tells me that the region (J), is asia.
    The country (JY), is Japan.
    The manufacturer (YA), is Yamaha.
The specific model (digits 4,5,6,7,8 ), is ?
The check digit (digit 9), I can figure out if I had the specific model.
    The year (B), is 1981.
The assembly plant (2), is the plant code.
The serial number (012656), self explanatory.

I don't know, maybe I'm just spinning my wheels here on this one. But I can't read the numbers on the bike, and I don't have a title for it yet. So as a result it isn't registered or tagged. And no, I'm not riding it yet like some toads would.

I only have 9 digits on my serial number, but it's in 3 places.

The decal tag which can be worn off by cable rub, it's also stamped into the frame on the other side of the steering head, behind the Seca's master cylinder, and finally on the engine case by the oil fill plug.

Sorry I don't know the meaning of the digits, seems like you've done a good job on that!

Yeah I've got the 9 numbers stamped on the frame and the engine also, (5G2-012656). But is this the actual VIN # that shows up on the title? Or is it the number that I'm try to read on the left side of the steering head? Maybe if someone has their title handy they could tell me how many digits show in the VIN, is it 9 or 17? I'm so confused... :?

I also got my bike without a title. I used the 9 digit number ( which is the VIN ) to do a last registered owner search. Long story short, the bike is now registered to me, and the 9 digit VIN is on my owners cetificate as well as a registration number not containing any of the VIN numbers.

Cool thanks Nick, this site always amazes me with speedy responses and help.

Just one more thing Nick, where did you do the search at? Did you do it online or through law enforcement?

    Glad to be of help!
Our province uses a government run insurance system for motor vehicles. The search was thru them, and they wouldn't have been able to help if the bike was registered in a different province!

Thanks guys I'll check around when the sun comes up in the morning. Well...a couple hours after it comes up. I doubt any government agency starts work before 8 or 9 am. LOL

    You guys are great.

Waddya mean you doubt any agency? Your service members are hard at it 0600! Another note on the VIN issues. I call the non-emergency phone number of the CHP here and check VIN's for free.

I also have 9 digits on my registration. Here in Manitoba we can call our provincial insurance and inquire about vehicle’s previous accidents and write-off history by giving them the VIN #. Their search is only province wide.

Out of province searches are offered for a fee at local motor vehicle branch (driver’s licensing). They also do last registered owner searches for a fee.

    Happy Dance!!! :D :D

Through a little internet detective work, and using different colors of light on the sticker plate on the steering stem, (I guess watching all of those episodes of CSI on TV paid off), I figured out the VIN on my Seca. Then I called the product service department at Yamaha Motors, and they confirm that I have the correct VIN. According to the guy I talked to there after 10 years they purge their database on frame #'s. But they maintain the VIN's of every bike ever produced by them. Luckily, the bike that came off of the assembly line exactly 10 bikes after mine was returned to the factory and never sold. He said it was probably damaged in shipping and returned. So the VIN number was exactly the same, with the exception of the 16th digit in the VIN and of course the 9th digit (check digit). So I now have the correct VIN. Good thing too, as the state of Iowa requires the 17 digit VIN for any vehicle manufactured for 1981 and newer vehicles.

The other day I checked with the highway patrol and they have no record on file for my frame #, or the old plate that was on the bike. So I now know that it wasn't reported as stollen in the past. If all goes well I should be able to put the bike on the road next week. 8)

I'm thinking about using a title service company in Nevada to handle the titling. They are called International Title Service. Has anyone here used them? Their fee seems a little high, but they claim to be able to supply a clean title in just a couple of days. Sure beats the 2-3 months that the state of Iowa quoted me.

I'll keep you all posted, and hopefully I'll see you out on the pavement soon.

I've always just used the 9-digit 'Engine Number,' even moving back and forth from Wisconsin. In fact that's what's on my current title (the 5G2. . . . one).

But in getting a new insurance quote, they needed the 17 digit number. Similar to the OP, the control cables have nicely rubbed out some numbers/letters.

I've got an '81 JX750rh and there's what I was able to get off the neck:

    JY . . . 200 3 BA007076

    Thoughts?

Yep, got this one figured out for ya.

    JYA5G2003BA007076

Pretty sneaky how they include 5G2 in the VIN, huh?

While researching VIN's I came across a VIN checker, pretty handy thing.

Analog X VIN Checker It seems to come up as "unknown" for the specific model, no matter what VIN you put into it.

I entered the VIN I just gave you and it comes up as a valid number.

What is the best place online for parts? Thanks for the VIN help, seems like it should work. what does the 001 stand for?

Actually the 5G200, stands for the specific model, and the 1 is a check digit, which is figured by a long mathematical formula from all of the other digits. The check digit will always be 1-9 number, or, (if the digit comes out to 0), it will be an X.

    The C, means it's an 82 model.

See my first post for the rest of the numbers explanation.

Your bike is a Seca, isn't it?

    BTW welcome to the forum.

domatt, check the Links section for parts sources: http://www.xjbikes.com/Web_Links.html

I've bought from oldbikebarn.com and motorcyclecarbs.com so far. They were both a little slow since parts were backordered and I wasn't really informed of that ahead of time, but overall, I've got no complaints about them.
