    *oil seal

Hey everyone. I need help. I am rebuilding my 1982 xj650r seca and while trying to assemble my gear components together i have noticed that my middle gear did not have oil seal installed from biggining (see pic attached). On the IPB it shows that there must be an oil seal there (it is #32). I have been trying to find that seal online but no luck so far. I was wondering if any of you know if that seal was not installed on factory or removed for a specific reason (like to lubricate outside portion of middle gear ‍♂️. I am just guessing at this point). Please let me know if you know anything about it.

    Thank you.

Woah! Ya, dont know how thats missing!
+1 on xj550, get one from chacal, it will fit!
Otherwise it will take a lot of oil to fill your driveshaft housing! ;)

You won't lose any oil. That seal dosen't open to the outside of the case.
It does need to be there to ensure that there is a sufficient volume of oil for the bevel gears to run in.
The seal makes sure that oil does not drain back to the sump on the clutch side.

Oil won't get into the driveshaft housing either. The output shaft has an o-ring on the bearing carrier.

So should I even bother getting that oil seal from @chacal? Or do I just install as it was before since it is not doing anything anyway?

The seal should be installed. That bevel gear works just like a ring and pinion on a car. Less oil means a much shorter life, and I doubt that you'd like to open the bottom end up again.

Hey everyone, just got back to my project and realized that my manual tells me that oil seal mentioned above is not installed on all xjs. #26- oil seal*. And that star refers you to the note that tells you "fitter to xj650...RJ..." that is what i have. (If XJ650RJ means XJ650 R Seca). But that makes me think that #26 oil seal was not installed from factory. So I am still not sure if I have to get a seal for it.
Anyone have any thoughts about that????

The service manuals all have errors. I believe that to be one of them. The RJ suffix is the U.S. delivered Seca 650.
