I need to order some new parts for my carbs, but I do not know what type or model the Mikuni Carbs are for the XJ550, can anyone help please?

Basically, all but one mixture screws are ceased in the carbs, and all the drain offs are ceased in, plus I need new main jets and a couple of other bits and pieces.

Indidentally, can anyone please tell me what main jet sizes I need if I were to ditch my airbox and use individual filters?

    Thanks very much.

    The 550s use a Mikuni BS28. Model ID 4U8 00.

I strongly recommend chacal as your source for carb parts. While it is possible to find some cheaper parts online or on eBay, there are a few items out there that are incorrect and will cause you headaches. Specifically, butterfly shaft seals and float needle/seats; as well as float bowl gaskets.

There is no "set formula" for tuning with pods. The CV carbs on our bikes do not respond well to having an unlimited supply of air, they are dependent upon a finite volume (and thus velocity) of intake flow.
I really recommend against it, especially on the 550; you'll just give away rideability for very little gain. (IMHO, others have different opinions.)
