miles per gallon on the xj550

Hi all, well i went on my first real drive over the long weekend here in Nova Scotia Canada. Bare with me my American XJ friends as I describe my fuel milage. I filled up and drove aprox: 138km before the bike bogged and i had to flick to resereve. I then drove another 21km until i refueld again. I put approx 10 liters of gas in and I was topped off. So with this I assume I burned approx 13.3 km per liter of gas or aprox 36 miles per gallon.

Does anybody know what my gas to distance ratio should be. It is a 1982 maxim 550. No modifications......also I figured its approx a 5 liter reserve or approx just over a gallon.

You should be getting more like 45-50mpg (19-21 km/l).

Pull the spark plugs and see what color they are. Sounds like you're running a tad rich, or leaking gas somewhere...

 

Your mileage sounds like it's about right. I average about the same. If I drove like a wimp and didn't take it to redline on a regular basis maybe it would do better. Still twice the mileage as the mini-van and about ten times the fun!

 

(edited) you get 32.5 USA miles per gallon based on your numbers.
I'd say you should be shooting for close to 50 MPG (USA).
Room for improvement.

 

so 65-68 avg would be high then? i'll see what i get after doing the carbs over winter but that's what i got all last summer.

 

Daye, when you figure gas mileage, fill the tank to the bottom of the neck, bike on the level.
Reset your odometer.
When you fill up next, fill to the bottom of the neck again.
Divide Kilometers traveled from the odometer by the number liters you just put in.

Astounding ! What's your secret? jets? Float level? slow driving?

For accuracy, 3 tanks back-to-back (400 miles or so) or a running total is way better than a single tank test.

 

we'll say careful riding and my trip to work happens to fall perfect in the power band so little throttle is needed but the bike still moves decent.

 

I get anywhere from 42 to 50 mpg, depending on my mood!! 8O Normal city driving plus about 2 miles highway run to work. But sometimes, I just gotta get out there and open it up, you know. Drops it a little bit when I do that.

 

42-52 (miles per) depending on the mood my right hand is in.
