I just got the spin on oil filter adapter in the mail from Chacal (thanks again for the great service!) and I'm trying to find a good oil to use.

I'm having a heck of a time finding castrol 4t online anymore and I've found VALVOLINE® 4-STROKE SAE 20W-50 MOTORCYCLE OIL from Napa. It's not synthetic but does say it has detergents in it. Is that ok?

Also does anyone know if I'll need extra oil with the K&N mini can spin on filter?

I used the valvoline for a while at first. It was a fine oil for me.

I've been swayed into the 15w40 Shell RotellaT (diesel oil) camp for now, though--the lighter (40) hot weight is good (heavier oils do put a bit more resistance on the engine from what I've read, though that's not generally a bad thing, just hurts performance a small amount), though if the oil were to be left in long enough to go bad, 15 would be worse than 20. (You should never leave oil in that long, though, so that shouldn't be a real problem.)

It also has Zinc and other goodies that are helpful for inner engine anti-wear, though, which is great.

I highly doubt you'll need any extra oil; I'd imagine it would be a bit less or almost exactly the same.

The color of the oil doesent always mean that it's good or bad. It's when the molecules in the oil that break down then it's a bad thing.

Have you tried autozone? That's where I get my 4t.

I stocked up cause a month or so ago it was on sale for 2.99/qt.

They also sell the 15w40 at autozone (in at least two different cities in Texas) in a gallon container for like $17, which is a pretty good deal as well.
