I just renewed my insurance this morning and the agent told me something interesting.
In New York the insurance "only covers pedestrians". And she rides so (I assume) is especially knowledgeable.
So if I am injured in a no-fault state (NYS) and don't have GOOD health insurance,I'm screwed.
Something to think about the next time I'm tempted to do red line in 5th gear, although at that speed it's a moot point.

    Ross1,

Sounds odd. Not saying she's lying but did you askwhy would the insurance not cover damages to you, your bike or anything else that could be damaged in a accident (God forbid)? Is it just the insurance company you're talking about or is it some sort of state law? Let us know.

Ok, I JUST walked in the door from my insurance agent. I had to go do some other stuff there, so I asked. Here's the scoop.

If you have comprehensive and collision insurance, your bike can be repaired and/or replaced depending on the claim. The liability covers you in the event you hit someone else and damage either them or their property or mode of transportation.

If you have liability-only coverage, you can repair or replace your bike at your own expense as there will be nothing claimable for your bike. You are covered in the even that you hit someone else and damage either them or their property or mode of transportation.

In ANY case, your own personal bodily injuries, as well as injuries to YOUR passenger are NOT covered by the insurance. ANY injuries to you or your passenger are to be covered by your own medical insurance. Possible exception being for the cost of ambulance transportation, as there has been some precedent set in some instances.

Hope that helps clear it up a bit. So the long and short of it is--if you total your bike and somebody elses, just make sure that YOU don't get injured. LOL

    Wow, that's insane.

Kinda the opposite of what I have.

If I or my passenger get injured they're covered, as well as the person I hit/their property.

My bike however, is not covered.

Wisconsin has a minimum medical coverage requirement. So yes you are covered if you get injured but only up to $x as covered by your policy. Anything in addition to that is to be covered by your health insurance.

You definitely have to ask why cause that doesn't make sense. It's like an excuse for them to avoid responsibility. I would at least get a hard copy of their
policy. By the way so how did it go?

    i have 500k/500k with 10k medical

and that mandatory medical coverage i think may have been taken back out when walker got in office. i may be wrong though. or it might still be a 2k minimum. beauty of that, is that takes affect right away. so if you have a 1500 healthcare deductible, the bike insurance covers your healthcare deductible.

i think i said that right, lol

Guys, it's vastly different from state-to-state. Some require only PL and PD (personal liability and property damage) some require "comprehensive" ("full" coverage) as well. And what those various types of coverage MEAN is different from state-to-state as well.

Exactly. And what those terms may mean from policy to policy and company to company may be different as well.

ALWAYS read the fine print, and know what it really says.

Ross was talking about his policy here in NY, I am also talking about my policy here in NY. Don't know what he has.....I have just the very basic liability stuff on my bikes.

(Here in NYS) I used to carry the max. For years.Still do with auto ins. I'm an ICU/ED nurse and know how expensive trauma-care is.
However, after she (ins. agent) was nice enough to fill me in (after all it dropped her commission a bit) I dropped my coverage to the minimum. Why should I pay State Farm any more than necessary, never having caused a car accident and never having had a motorcycle ticket or claim....Hmmm,hope I'm not inviting bad fortune.
