Bought a "Listed to fit 1985 XJ700 Maxim" luggage rack off ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT

    - even though I thought the mounting brackets looked odd (strange angles on the forward bolting area)

And sure ´nough - when I got it found out there´s no way they´ll fit.

Later coincidentally saw the first pic of the luggage rack on a bike,

Najus´ for sale on Ebay and posted here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1335.html

    - Have mailed and Pm´ed Najus but no answer yet.

Any others know this lugagge rack an have any idea how it is mounted?

    Finn, XJ700, Denmark

From the pics it looks like it goes on top of or under your backrest bracket, and mounts with the same bolts.

After looking at the pics more I would say it goes on top. Do the holes match up width wise? Does the luggage rack itself separate from the bracket? If so you may have to take it apart and put the bracket through the backrest from the front side and then reattach the rack.l

    Hi Richard

Right, only way would be on top - but:

1: the holes are much to wide (to a degree where we actually tried to imagine them going around the outside of the backrest - but that would be impossible also))

2: The angle on the mounting hole area in the brackets will make the rack descend appr. 45 degrees.

yes, the brackets seperate from the rack but even if we were to mount them on top sliding them through the backrest, they would have to be bend two ways - one to get the rack horizontal and then again outwards behind the backrest to attach to the (considerably) wider mounting holes underneath the rack - not to mention that theres not nearly enough space between the back seat and backrest for any of this...

Sorry it was just a thought.
Maybe Najus will get back with you.
    Good luck

I'm not sure that Najus is the person who sold it - Mikes is pretty big and is in OR... Najus's profile says PA... plus in his profile Najus says 86 Xj not 85 like the ebay ad.

I've actually brought stuff from Mike's before I think - and I think I got the wrong parts. :-/ I'd have to recheck my papers before I swore to that.

It looks the same but if the mouting bracket angle is wrong then I'm not confident the part will fit. In the picture it is clearly and X... but I dunno

wonder what happened in other years...

Woot, I know he didn't sell it.
But the top pic above is a pic of his bike.
I think Finn was trying to contact him, maybe for more pics of the mounting.

I misunderstood FinnogAngela's first post - I thought the apstrophy was to show Najus possession of that particular rear rack as opposed to one like the ebay ad.

Sorry about that bit of confusion...

A bit of a mystery to me the rack. It looks right at first glance doesn't it?It's one of those moments you'd like to swing by and play with it yourself... have a beer and wonder if that would help align things.

The downfalls of the web... hands on is a problem and the beer isn't as refreshing.

    Thanks for the pictures.
I am looking for a luggage rack for my XJ 700 Maxim.
Now I know how it looks like and how they mounted it.
Maybe I can build one by myself. I try it in the wintertime.

Woot - you´re right; one has the feeling that if you just play around with it a bit it´ll fit.. But it won´t, no matter what (still the beer always comes in handy..)

Achim- You´re welcome - but what do you mean "how they mounted it"?
Also, do you have the xj-cd? In the "pictures" section, Mike Kampmans (also on thexj-owners mailling list) xj700 has another type, original luggagerack, which I personally find nicer and more useful.

Apart from that, good news. Got a mail from Dave at xj-owners mailing list, telling me he bought the Ebaybike and would take of the rear seat and take some pics after he gets it - great, right?

Also he mentioned the brackets might come from a v-max, as it had an identical lugaggge rack - we´ll see..

    @ FinnogAngela

I could not present it me, as the luggagerack looks and is assembled.

Not sure what you mean but anyway I got some pictures from Dave Rea (xj-owners maillist), who bought the Ebay bike, showing his mounting. The brackets are similar, apart from the angled pieces which bolt on to the backrest.

    - and regarding my friends rack/bracket a third, metalcunning friend was able to bend the brackets, so the mounting looks quite like Dave´s (will try to get a couple of pics).
