whats the going rate in your area?

talked to the only operation here in the thumb of michigan and they get $330.00...

this is the H-D Riders Edge New Rider Course using Buell Blasts...

5 day course, with an MSF cert issued upon completion...

the WIFE has stated she wants to learn how to ride. this after 12 years of being married and "i just want ride behind you"...

if she wants, ive got no problem with it. looks like the maxim will get a new rider next year...

$275 through Onondaga Community College for MSF basic rider course.

I'll be taking it for the next two weeks. I rode all through college and could pass the road test no problem but I figure I owe it to my wife and kids to be as good on the bike as I can. If I pick up anything then I will definately be ahead of the game.

When i did my msf course, i paid 335 for the 5 day course. I can also go back for refresher courses at no cost (assuming there is an open spot in a class) as well as open access to the practice course whenever there is no class going on.

I did the MSF course, not the Rider's Edge course, after doing a bit of research. I don't have ther references handy, but the RE course not only had a much worse record for saftey in the class (including at least one fatal accident), but also had a worse record for rider's getting into accidents than the MSF course.

The curricula are not the same, the training bikes are usually bigger (RE always uses the 500cc Blast which is a bit tougher to handle for the absolute beginner), and the MSF instructors seem more brand-agnostic than the HD sponsored courses (this is based on conversations i've had with other new riders)

[plug] If anyone is in the Milwaukee, WI area, i definitely recommend Ride Alive Motorcycle Academy (http://www.ridealive.net). The website is a little rough, but they are good guys and have really done a great job with the couple of folks I sent there way. Small classes and lots of ride time.[/plug]

The SMF class here is $275.
3 days, 1 3.5 hour session, two 9 hour sessions.
Taking the course = written permit test and rode test.
Take paperwork to DMV and get license.

Problem occuring now, there are more new riders than before ~$4 gas.
Lots of new riders mean more folks taking the class.
I figure its a good thing though

This doesn't help you, but adds to the comparison. Here in Denver there are two ways of getting the BRC (Basic Riders Course). One is through the Harley Davidson dealership, but, as my B.I.L., who rides a Road King says, "Everything from Harley is overpriced." Harley wants $325 or $345, I believe. The other way is to go through our local chapter of ABATE, the biker's advocacy group. They only charge $225. And either route is booked out a month or two in advance. I bought my bike a month ago, and am taking my course (two days, 10 hours each) this weekend.

The course in PA is free. There is usually a waiting list. I felt it was a great course. I had ridden in my younger days. I knew the basic operations. I guess you never forget. But I tell ya I learned some much. I felt 100% more confident afterwards. We used Suz 250's they were a good size. Everyone in my class passed and received the endorsement for the license after the test.

I plan to take the advanced course. You use you own bike. Some people told me it was a tougher course but worth taking. They also said to get some general riding experience before taking it.

About 2 years ago when I attended the class it was about $190 can't remember exactly. But it was 2-3hr night classes watching video and taking DOT written test, then a Saturday and Sunday class of riding. It was like 10 hours riding instruction and practice, last hour taking your test. Others who had no riding experience had problems with the test; I would like to have seen more practice for the true newbie’s.
Went by the parking lot where I took my MSF course this weekend and there are now 2 courses setup and 12 riders in each class. Had a blast watching all the newbie’s and nice to see a large number of ladies learning to ride, did not see anyone drop there bike.

It was around $300 when I took it in Wichita Falls, TX in June of 06. The base safety office actually paid for it. It was two nights of videos and workbook type work, then a whole day Saturday of practice/real riding instruction, then Sunday was some more practice and the test. We rode these little 125CC cruiser-type bike made by Kawasaki and I looked like a goofy mofo riding that thing. (I'm 6'5" 230)
