Well here it is, got it off craigslist for $400 with a clean and clear title. bike turns over but wont start I figure the carbs are the main concern. I've never done anything like this, so it should be fun. I plan on bobbing this up if I can get it running.

okay so heres the storey I got. This kid bought it 4 weeks ago and rode it home, i called the previous owner and verified that it ran. this kid rode it home 70 miles. Got home and relaized it was low on gas so he dumped in gas the was in a can on his porch, he said he ran it down to get the mail one day and it got worse running and died. then it wouldnt start. So I bought it for $400 with a clear title. I just got it home, and took off hte fuel lines and drained it. I got a bunch of GREEN gas. I'm thinking he put in gas that should of gone in a two stroke oil/gas mixture. How bad is this for this motor, I'mma get it all cleaned out try and work the carbs back to clean and then see if she fires with REAL gas. and help would be greatly appreciated.

It also came with a carb rebuild kit, and 2 brand new tires, that just need mounted. So im pretty happy with the $400 price for everything

Hopefully I can get it running. but here is the bike when I first brought it home yesterday.

So you know that friend that wastes his money on dumbstuff, and then cant figure out what to do with it??? Well thats me. I went and bought this and dont really have much mechanical ability. I can change oil, and I own alot of tools that have never been used. But Im going to try and learn on here and apply it to this bike. here's a few more pictures of it, after some of the teardown.

    Oh my God....

Did someone really think that those old socks would make good filters?

Please tell me that was some temporary thing to get it home.

    Wow.....

If gonna "bob" it, keep me in mind. Those painted fenders might be calling my name :)

    wow dude ! hah

well - welcome to the forums of course. dont let the bike intimidate you. im more of a computer tech than gear head, but you can google the hell out of these bikes and find posts everywhere.

i dont know how the bike is affected with the ''fuel'' he put in, but i will say that from what i found, new gas will be essential, and a problem with the bike running very well be the 'airpods' your usin...
experts will chime in im sure, but if you have a wild amount of airflow, doesnt that mess up the carb's mixing and then bikes running?
try getting airpods for the bike, and let us know how it goes..

also, regarding your tear down, - label everything - take pictures for reference, and tape and paper on wires, and plastic bags with sharpies, it will save some sanity

I have a negative budget at the moment and I still haven't bought all the tools let alone a single "part" to safe-tify my new ride.

PM me if you want and the 650's would actually fit a stock 82 750 Maxim... (Front and back)

I am definetly going to bob it. I dont know how long it was ran with the socks. Im hoping not long. I already ordered Air Filter Pods for it. thanks for chiming in guys. I cant wait to keep moving forward with it.

On a Second note though, I put in another couple hours tinkering around with it. heres the pics of the new progress, Old pipes are off, some more brackets, made my first cut on the frame.

In the one photo is my Dad, making the second cut. he's a crazy bastard.

WOW you are cutting into it already.

And after PM'ing I noticed most of the frame/extra parts have been repainted to match the tank/fenders/frame :)

The PO definitely was trying to make it shinier :)

The forum user Chacal is the parts guru and a great vendor around here.
PM him and/or check out the XJ4ever subforum and look at the types of parts he typically sells.

MikesXs.com is pretty good too apparently, never ordered from there but theres decent reviews on this site.
Also check out TCBro's website too. The guys on here say theyre solid.

And apparently, we should stay away from 'the old bike barn'
    heh

I wish I was up in State College right now :D My wife and all my friends from HS went to Penn State and I went into the Army. After a year in school in GA and a year in Korea I was fortunate enough to get stationed in MD and went up every weekend I could. What a great place. We're all from York, PA.

What is the plan with this bike? You mentioned bobbing it. Are you going hardtail, struts, shorter shocks? Solo bobber seat, cut down stock, sportster, or fabbing your own? Drag bars, stock, apes? Tank? What are we thinking about doing?

imma use struts for now, Until I decide how I wanna do the frame for the long haul. Solo bobber seat with springs. Clubman bars, i havent decided on tank yet.

Here are the temporary Struts that were made to see where I wanted the stance at. there 3/8" steel and originally I had the drilled every 1" from 13 down to 8". I really like the 9" stance, which is about 4" lower than it sat with the shocks on it when I got it. Now I will come up with something more perminant.

Also my clubman bars came so I had to install them to check the look. I love them. I put the stock tank back on for an idea, I Dk what tank imma use yet. But so far, I'm loving this thing!

and finally for your emjoyment. PS- Did i mention this is my 1st project bike? haha

how is the shaft at that height? It's not binding or anything? Looks good that low.

I vote to stick with the stock tank. It looks good.

    Monday Update-

I took the headlight all apart and off the bike. Cleaning up some ugly wires in there. Im sanding down the headlight, trim ring, the mounting bracket and getting it ready for paint. I also took the speedo stuff off, im gonna paint the housings for it as well. Wish we didnt need them in PA, but we do.

Quite a drop in the rear. I like how it puts the tire so close to the frame. Are you going to get a fender in there or leave it open?

yeah, imma use a rear fender, im waiting on it to come to start fabbing it in there. i figured the 4" drop wouldn't be a problem. everything seems pretty straight. working on getting some pics from today

    headlight looks GREAT!

I was asking about the height, because a guy on here put shocks on that were just under 9" and he said the shaft was binding. That's why I was curious. I have 10" shocks on mine right now and I would LOVE to go a bit lower.

    +1

Shocks give too much at that lenght I guess.
9" (assuming eye-to-eye) on the shelf, put them on the bike and they'll become 8 3/4", put a reasonable fat ass on it and it becomes 8", take a bump and your rear tire is about to scratch the back of your neck, after you locked up the drive shaft that is, lol

Do yourself a favor and get a good one. MIG is good and easy to use with some practice. Flux core works but is hard to get good at.

    MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!

well I have/had saturday off, I thought I'd get to go visit the local amish man, and get him to do some welding for me. But my Fiance got me out of bed at 730 and said we were going yardsaling. (Fock me) So were going up the road, and im B*tching like us men do when our wives make us do something we dont wanna do. Anywayz we get to the first yardsale She gets out and I dont, she taps on my window and says get out now, I may need you to carry something. So madder than Sh*t now I get out and follow. Now that im cussing her out under my breath, and really starting to doubt my reasons for proposing to her in the first place, I notice a cart. I walk over to it, and I HEARD ANGELS SING!!!!!!! There is was a Handmade Cart with a Campbel hausenfield (tractor supply) Brand Mig Welder, with Argon tank (full). For $250, I talked to the guy and bought it for $200. I now love yardsales!!!!! just gotta learn to use it.

    haha

touche, you'll come to find welding is fun, in small bits...

here's my advice- for the basic, and most widely used weld, you weld in U's so your weld will look like this: ))))))) just make sure you take the paint off, have good ground, and it should sound like bacon frying.

luckily i have access to a state of the art Miller wire welder, and it even has an aluminum spool.. and welding is easy, just remember to change tips often, I notice a difference, and practice before you touch her to the bike....

pps- if you weld on this bike, it's smart to disconnect the battery, tci, and rectifier

I didnt get shorter cables, im not sure im going to be using the clubman bars, I dont think its going to fit with my build the more I progress through it, so if someone wants a set, I'll sell them to you.

    Sunday June 27, Update.

I mounted a new horn its a bicycle horn. We started the carb rebuild and cleaning. everything is going well. And I did some practice welding.

Well, today I ran to the nearest harbor freight, about 1.5 hrs away and got some tools I needed. And got home and did some work, today we measured and cut up the trailer fender to the size and place I wanted it to go. we got the rear turn signals measured and put into place, along with the 50's sparto (limp Dick) taillight. Tomorrow, gonna take it apart and sand and prep the rear fender for making the brackets, then ready for paint. I replaced the clutch pull cable today, cuz the old one was pretty bad. I got it on but, the pull is so easy, I mean real easy, but the clutch things seems to move up and down to the full? does these have a easy pull to them????

Grinding some of the frame where we cut.
