Hello all, It's finally turning spring like up here in Canada and I got my 1982 XJ550 fired up. I bought and fixed up the bike for my son who is here now and we are just starting out driving. We took it for a ride and then came back to the house to do some adjustments so that it fits my son better. One of the adjustments was the foot pedal was too high for him so we took the bolt for the brake pedal right off to move it down a bit. When my son was going to put the pedal back on the rod mechanism that the brake pedal sits on push through and almost fell off. Well that was okay and we got it almost set up nicely but then we noticed that there was no tension on the pedal and the big, thick spring was just hanging there. We tried to figure out where that spring connects to and how it sits there but we couldn't figure it out. Does anyone have a picture of that area or know where that big spring connects too to give it the resistance that it needs on the pedal? Thanks for your help as always:)

Hi Brent and thanks for the picture. I don't think that is the spring and I might have to take a picture of it tomorrow. Its a super thick spring that one end has a 90 degree hook on it and the other end is just straight and flat I think. Its hard to put into words but it sits right beside the end of the rod that comes out and your rear brake pedal attaches to. The rod goes from where the brake pedal is, through a hole and then all of the other attachments and springs are there. There are 2 springs and one is like yours in your picture and the other is way more heavy duty and that' s the one that fell off of what ever it was sprung to and thats the one we have to get back on. I hope that helps if not I will try to take a few pictures

Just realised the 550 has a totally different spring setup to my 650, so ignore that photo

I remember doing this too. Took me a while to figure out. Persevere is my suggestion. Try the spring both ways around there will be a peg it tensions against I think.

Here is a 650, not sure if they are exactly the same but it should give you an idea. The previous pic shows the brake switch spring, I believe you are referring to the to torsion spring that goes around the pivot shaft:
