For awhile now when I press the start button there has been either a delay between when I press the button and when my bike actually starts or nothing will happen until I tap the solenoid on my frame and it starts right up. Now today when I was riding my bike to school, I made it about 3 blocks and then my bike just died without warning. I go to start it up again and nothing happens when I press the start button, I don't think I hear the solenoid clicking either. Do I need a new solenoid? Would that cause my bike to die while I was riding it?

First thing to check is your fuses.

Fuses, fuseBOX, connectors on solenoid and battery, try temporarily unplugging the safety relay.

My 1100 just did the same thing. The connector in the headlight from the ignition switch was not making good contact. I could move the wires and get it to work, but had to take the connector apart and tighten the crimp on the spade connector. Now its fine.
So since you were tapping the solenoid to get yours to work I would say there must be a bad connection in that area. Pull any connetors apart ad inspect those terminals to see if there is a connection problem.
