Took it today!!! Got the XJ together enough to go out and about with my father (permit) and oh my god I will ALWAYS own a motorcycle! Put a modest 30 miles on it getting the hang of things. Fastest I hit was about 60 mph, which is the fastest 60 has ever felt! HAHA As this area is heavy with traffic, it might be some time till I peg that 85 mark. :) The bike runs great, nice color on the plugs (thank you Rick!) but now I believe it needs a new starter as it takes 5-10 tries before it engages. I'll look up rebuilding this thing first, most likely new brushes are in order as well as the engagement solenoid.

All in all... I'm STILL smiling! If you care to share, tell me about your first time!

I know the feeling. I took mine out for her maiden voyage (with me) on Thursday. I put a very modest 3 miles on yesterday and then another 7 or so today. These bikes are a pleasure to drive. I only hit about 45 mph but found out real quick that I'm going to need to find an insulated riding jacket for cold WI mornings and a windsheild for anything much faster.

bought my 81 650 maxim about 2 1/2 weeks ago. The guy let me test drive before I bought it. NO brakes (he told me). It was needless to say, very exciting. Got it home, cleaned it up rebuild all brakes, new tire. I love this bike! I really wish the speedo kept going, I can't believe how fast it goes to the pin. I bet that bike will do 120.

Haha, no brakes sounds closer to the edge of scary rather than exciting! These things do have phenomenal engine braking though! :)

Pvt, I had a CJ-7 before and drove that thing in much chillier weather, I realized that today too, a windshield makes a whole helluva difference!
