    Howdy ya'll!

While I was in class last night my wonderful husband was up to no good ;) When I got home I found out what "no good" actually was. He was out buying me my very own 1985 Maxim 700. I almost pee'd myself when I got home and saw her beautiful self sitting in the garage. She has 6,485 miles on her. I joined this forum to get all the information I could about the bike and what possible things I should be looking for and who knows....maybe some modifications.

    Ciao~

    Welcome to the club!

Nice looking bike. It looks like someone took care of her.

Just browse through the "FAQ suggestions" part of the forum, most of what you need to know will be in there.

The first thing you need to check is the rear brake shoes for delamination. The shoes need to be visually inspected for this, you can't tell by "feel". If they delaminate while on the road your back tire will lock up unexpectedly. Not good.

Any parts you will need can be found from our member "chacal". His catalog is in the upper right corner of the site. Best parts guy on the planet for the XJ.

Also do a forum search for:
    Church of Clean
    Clunk Test

The FAQ Suggestions will have write ups done by the members for new (and old) members who need to work on the bike.

Thanks guys! I will def check out "chacal" for parts. I think my husband bought her for me because I have been naggin him for a vmax and he says that is to much bike for me.....so he bought me a "baby" vmax LOL! Im pretty sure the brakes will need a once over because they seem to be a bit squishy but other than that I will have to get an update from Greggylicous (husband) on what else she will be needing.

The XJ650 is the great granddad to the R6.

Your XJ700 is the R6's Great Uncle.

Zero to 60 times are right around 4 seconds, top speed 135 IIRC

Your sweet lil XJ700 will flat leave that Roadstar like it was standing still...

The XJ is a "racebike for the street" and the Maxim the pioneering "power cruiser."

(It's astonishingly fast. Be careful, and rebuild the brakes first.)

These xjs are super fast. Looks like you got yourself a real gem. Like everyone else says check the rear brake shoes, check the valve shims for proper clearance, and make sure the front brakes are in good shape. Your in place that has all the answers you need. Enjoy that bike shes a beauty.

That is one nice looking bike, and yes even though it is not the X, it is a quick bike, will have plenty of power for you. One thing I did to mine to save the fork seals from leaking is in the photo. May not look as pretty, but 20 years and 50,000km still no leaks....grit and dried bug gutts do not get driven into the forks.....

@ Forgiven- Is the difference between the xj n and the x that radiator type thing in the front. Forgive me for not knowing what it is but I have noticed that mine is without it and I am seeing a bunch of bikes with it.

My 2nd grade teacher always said there is never a stupid question. I have abused that saying because if I dont know I will ask, and keep asking until I understand.

The N is air cooled, the X is liquid cooled, thus the "radiator thing" in the front. The X uses a different top end with a different valve configuration. I think everything else is pretty much identical.

Your question has been answered...now perhaps you will be wanting the quicker X model. I can tell you from having raced a bike like yours that you are not far behind in performance, yours is a very quick bike also. It probably weighs less which will make it more nimble in handling. Enjoy it for what it is, a very nice ride.

Welcome from VA!! Nice looking bike. It looks like someone took care of that bike. I would still check the things that have already been mentioned. They are nice bikes. I have owned other bikes before but I always seem to come back to the XJ bikes for some reason. I think they just look good and run even better.
