I searched the forum and didnt fine this exact concern. I just bought this bike not running. Removed the carbs and cleaned them. while riding the bike i have noticed the bike jerks under hard acceleration only in first gear. It doesnt jump out of gear but feels like a chain drive bike that is jumping the rear sprocket. It runs great and all other gears feel fine. Again it doesnt jump out of gear it just feels like it is jumping or skipping somehow. Any ideas? Thanks for all the advice. This is only under a hard pull. It will not jump totally out of gear and it will continue to pull.

Sounds more like a clutch problem.

The xs/xj 1100s are notorious for having first gear problems. I had one a few years ago that was doing the same exact thing. What happens is the gears dont contact each other properly from the factory. When you are in first there are two gears that lock together. One has pins and the other has slots. What happens over time is that the slots start getting worn down and the face of the other gear gets worn down also. After a while it gets so bad that when you give the bike throttle instead of locking together the gears break free from each other and slip. There are two ways of correcting the problem. You can either buy new gears or take a dremel and regrind the pins and slots so they will stay in contact with each other. There is also a washer that you move so the gears engage better. Luckily you do not have to pull the engine out in order to replace the gears. You can access them from under the bike after you remove the oil pan. It isnt too hard of a job but it can get frustrating at times.

I was afraid it might be a trans concern. It just feels so strange. I have repaired several bikes that jumped out of 2nd gear but I have never felt one do what this does. Just feels like it skips a tooth while under hard accell. I wish it was a clutch concern. Any other ideas before I tear into the trans?

Check the XS 1100 Website and see the gear slipping section
