For all of you looking for a passenger backrest and can't find one (like me) here is what I fabricated. Look in my photo album I have included pictures. I wanted a backrest for when I bring the kids but wanted to be able to remove it quickly and without tools, so I fabricated this unit. Got the idea from my friends brand new HD with his quick detach backrest. So I owe some credits for the idea to the HD designers.

Total cost of my project: $100 ($50 for the sissy bar and $50 for the HD hardware) note all prices are CDN dollars which is not worth a lot to be honest.

You'll need some 1/8 inch thick sheet metal (steel) and a piece of steel tubing to mate against the docking points. Of course welding is required. Dad's a welder, how convenient.

Hope you like it. I'll post some pics once all completed (painted and installed). You are more than welcome to steal the idea. I would love to come across a XJ rider with this installed. Maybe we could take time to enjoy a beer or two and share our fabrication experience.

    Enjoy fabrication!

Just checked out your Photos, this looks pretty cool and once the brackets are painted, this should look fantastic!! Great job and idea, will start the same project, since backrest's are virtually not to be found for an 81 XJ550 Maxim .... GREAT JOB so far!!
