A big XJ Bikes welcome to you Tonymyrs, have I got good news for you! Haynes sells a reasonably comprehensive book for about $18. You can purchase it on line or through a local merchant. If you care to spring a bit more, factory service manuals are the E-ticket! Can't go wrong there. Another piece of invaluable reading material is the XJ CD that can be had for $10. It is supposed to be the best compendium to the factory manual a fellow could want (don't know all the details, still waiting for mine). Most members have this CD and recommend it.
Minor clutch plate repair? Is it possible? I understood the only repair possible was to replace it. What issues are you dealing with?

Galling. Causes the Clutch to bind, slip or both.

You have to file or sand the dogs on the Driven Plates free of inperfections and anything similar to "Mushrooming" on the dogs resulting from being "Hard on the Clutch".

It's necessary to dress the channels on the Clutch Basket; too. A Sharpening Stone run along those edges and flats usually dresses-out the galling that prevents the Driven Plate floating as it should.

    Galling is repairable.
    Warp is not.
Don't waste time dressing a warped Driven Plate. Order a new one; or replace all of them with the NEW Plates provided in an aftermarket Clutch Overhaul Kit.

If the Basket has severe Galling. Replace that; too!

I have a little slipping when in 2nd and 3rd gear, so I went and got all 8 new plates and a new gasket I live in portland, Or and its starting to rain, I have no coverd dry place to work on it so it is getting a little frustrating not being able to change the plates and work on it. I was also riding to work today and it died twice on me coming out of first, when I got it started a few loud back fires came with it but then ran smooth after. usally it would fire right up but when I was leaving work it took some time to turn over. Could this be a carb problems due to the weather change???

Possibly. If you had the time and place to do it, I would invite you to pull the carbs and take a look at the internals. At the very least, I would drain the bowls into separate containers and look for contaminates/water. Good luck.
