Ok cleaned and bench synced my carbs. Now it will start and idle at about 1000, but if i hit the throtle is stays up between 4000 and 5000 rpm's. If i back off idle screw it comes down and stalls. But it i pull in clutch put it in gear and let clutch almost all the way out it drops and idles at 1100 again. It rides ok other than somtimes reving higher as i down shift till it gears down with clutch in. i have had carbs off 4 times yesterday and could not see anything hanging. I am reading alot about butterflys hung open and yes if i press down hard on butterfly adj screws it comes down from the high RPM's. But evrytime i rev throttle it will stick.Any ideas......

Sure sounds like your throttle is sticking open a bit. Could your throttle cable be sticking? This would explain why you don't find anything with the carbs when you have them out.
Possibly the return spring is weak and won't pull everything shut when it's all put together?
Pulling carbs 4 times in one day should merit some type of special award!

Air leaks. Take a look at your boots and the seals. Check for leaks between the manifolds and the engine.

Next look at your butterflies closely Pop the throttle open and then let it snap shut - does it take a bit of a push to finish closing them? If so check your springs are all seated properly. I have even taken the spring end at #3 and moved it up onto the lever to tighten it. They are 25 + years old after all.

There are 3 springs IIRC on the throttle shaft that help it close. If they snap close fine you should not have a problem

my bike was doing similar to what yours is doing. make sure you check the seal between your manifold and carb boots for ail leaks. I took all my boots off and resealed them and it fixed the problem.

Your getting some unwanted air, in there, check the carb boots, throttle shaft seals & vac'port caps.

There you go 3 folks telling you to look for air leaks. You can do some probing with an unlit propane torch. Engine will rev if propane enters though an air leak.

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
I wound up replacing some of the clamps because they were tight, but not tight enough. once I got them good and tight, my idle came down and I was able to adjust it to ~1050.
