What's going on everyone! I'm still new ish to the sight and looking to get some help.

I have an 85 XJ700 that I got through a trade and it's missing a couple pieces to get it running. It didn't come with the gauges or cluster so there is no factory ignition but it came with a random one to get wired in but I can't find any wiring schematics for it. I'm positive I have all of the other parts for the ignition system. That's the biggest thing but it also came with no tank, so if anyone has a xj700 or 750 maxim tank for sale let me know! That's what I'm looking to start with my project.

I appreciate any info and advice. Thanks!

    Welcome aboard!

Well, you'll have your work cut out for you......

    1. If the cluster is missing, where are the fuses now?

    2. No tanky, no runny. Now since you are in California you need to know that the California models for 85-86 xj700's had extra emission stuff on those bikes. These are ID'd by an extra tube off the carbs going to a canister in the tool compartment behind the right body cover. Then a tube goes up to the bottom of the tank for venting into the tank. So, a different carb rack, an evap canister, a different tank.

Therefore: you either need to complete that system again, OR, cap the carb port, remove the canister stuff ( I want it if you pull it off), get a standard tank, and you need a regular gas cap. If you find a Calif. tank, you'll need a non-vented cap.

As far as 700 or 750 tank----

The 85-86 tank is the same for both 700 and 750, airheads and liquid cooled (called the MaximX). The 750 was not available in the USA. Due to the "Harley Tariff" at the time.

All parts are available, so your bike will live.

Start by reading "the Information overload hour".

Welcome. In regards to determining if you have a California Emissions equipped bike, take a look at your carb rack, at the end where the carbs connect to the engine, and see if you have this brass tube sticking up (the tall one with the slight bend in it on the 2nd carb from the right)
