I bought a 1985 Yamaha xj700. The bike had no keys, no battery, no main wiring harness, no main fuse.
Since then, I've bought a main wiring harness, replaced the plugs, bought a new main fuse. The only thing I haven't bought is a the battery. I've currently been trying to jump the bike from my truck and have had no luck. I doesn't seem the be getting power to the proper place. I've also wired the ignition to bypass the key that I don't have. The temp gauge needle will move a hair when I get jumpers on the bike but I get nothing else. The fuses in the he instrument cluster appear fine. I've also tried to jump the bike directly from the starter but that won't get it started I've figured out because I'm just sending power directly to the starter and no where else. I JUST want to get the bike to run. Can someone please help? Feeling totally lost.

Since you mention a temp gauge, you must have a Maxim X (there are two models of XJ 700).

How are you bypassing the ignition switch? What jumped to what?

My apology, I'm new to the motorcycle game. It's a maxim m. When I say bypass, I mean connected a jumper to it (hotwire) to try and get it to start, in place of having the ignition key. Severely lost on what to do right now. I just took the main wiring harness out to start back from square one and see if I am not hooking something up right. Like I said though I'm really lost. Also this bike.has no head light, brake light or turn signals. So I have extra wires just hanging about which complicates things further.

There's no such thing as a Maxim m.

Are you trying to start it with no battery in it? That's a problem

Hmm well I thought there was such a thing...but ya, I'm trying to start it without the battery. How exactly is that a problem?

I figured trying to jump it from my truck would be fine.

If it is the one in your avatar, it is an XJ700XN.

If you don't have a battery hooked up in the bike, there is no sink for the ground. You're gonna fry stuff.

Just putting juice to the starter won't make the engine run. All that would do is turn the engine over if the starter turns.

You need: power through the RUN circuit. If things are disconnected in the bucket, the diode block may be missing.

You said fused in the cluster look good.....did you check the main fuse under the seat?

If you don't have a key in the main switch and have it turned on, I'm not surprised it won't run......

I tried to hot wire it through the plug that connects to the ignition. So basically what you guys are saying is just buy a battery for it and it should run? Also, the main fuse is good as well. What does the diode block look like? And yes, my avatar pic is my bike.

What is the purpose of the diode block? Just wondering.

some relays have 2 ways to activate them doide block makes it happen correctly
I would have to look at the wiring diagram to give a bettr answer

with the oil light it is tested when you press the starter button with no diode in circuit if you went low on oil your starter would activate

Reading the wiring schematic would probably help you quite a bit and understand what you're powering up and what needs power to run the bike. Just running power to wires until you find something that works is not a good way to go.
Make sure you have a continuity tester as well because if somebody has ripped all the wiring off of the bike there is a good chance they weren't an electrician to start with and you will be chasing wires.

Don't put led turn signals on until you do some research on how to do it because the stock flasher won't work.

A fully charged battery also really helps.

Only if you're attempting to start while in gear.
The kickstand swichees do tend get a bit grimy though, which can cause them to stick and not deploy. Cleaning the switch plunger and lubricating it with a dry-film lubricant is recommended.

No. Basically we're saying you ought to have a battery (alive or near dead) connected before trying to jump the bike. If it happens to start running without a battery connected to the grounds, you're running the risk of overloading things with out a ground connection.

Now, if it doesn't start or turn over with a good battery, then you can start narrowing things down.
