need help identifying my XJ

    as the title says i need some help i have just purchased a xj550 to rebuild as a project bike now according to the vin plate "12/80-5F9-000224" its a 1980 model but the local yamaha dealer told me they were only made from 81 onwards so im now a little confused i mean the engine number matches the vin so i know its original bnut thats about all any help would be greatly appreciated

    12/80 would be an 81 model since they're made before the year of release. 10/81, 11/81, 12/81 (Whatever) would be an 82 model and so on.
    I have a 81 xj650 it reads 10/80.

    My reference material confirms "5F9" indicates a 1981 550RH Oceanic model.
