OK so I was posting on an older thread which did get confusing so I'm starting one for me but my situation is my 82 xj750j that I bought was a wiring nightmare with no cluster so I decided to go with my bobber ideas I've been thinking about and now I'm at the point where it's ready to go but I'm still having trouble with troubleshooting my wiring for the head, tail, and brake light I found that older thread with the diagram on which wires to jump and connect together which I followed and now soon as I turn my ignition on all my lights come on and stay on I'm not sure what I'm missing or if there is a bad relay or something on that line maybe one of yous have had a similar issue and can help me out here it kills me everyday my bike sits in my driveway and I can't legaly take it on the street until I get this figured out so any help would be greatly appreciated and I switched to round headlight from that bulky square monster.....

Do you have a headlight relay? Perhaps it has been removed and jumped, which would cause the headlight to come on with the key switched to on. Relay should be located under left side cover and have a yellow dot.

Tail light should come on as soon as key is switched on.

Brake light should be activated by either the front or rear brake switch. Perhaps one of those is stuck in the on position. Make sure both front and rear brake levers are positioned to deactivate brake switches.

OK guys I appreciate all the help I'm pretty sure it's narrowed down now I got power to the rear brake switch and tail light/brake light but soon as I hit the back brake pedal I lost the power at the light so I'm pretty sure my rear brake switch is bad can I jump them two wire together to bypass the rear brake switch and run it off the front switch?

a rear brake switch might cost 10$. their kind of universal fit, just takes some putz'en around to get the spring right

Does that mean you blew a fuse or did the brake light switch from on to off? If it just went off then it may just need an adjustment as Polock suggested.

The front and rear brake switches are normally open, and the two switches are wired in parallel so that either the front brake or rear brake switch will close when the brake is used and illuminate the brake light. If you jump the two wires together the brake light would be on continuously if all is wired as per print.

Did you solve the headlight issue?
