I was getting my valve shim out of my first cylinder intake using the zip-tie method, and the zip tie got stuck in the valve. trying to take left only the tip in the valve. i tried working it out with tweezers, nails, everything. do i need to take off the head to get to that? or is there an easier way. if i do need to take the head off, any pointers to a good forum discussing this?

When you turn the engine so the cam opens the valve it should fall away.

Personally, I'd think the little bit of nylon would burn away as soon as you fired it up and wouldn't be an issue. Still might try to fish it out somehow.

tape a 6" piece of poly tube that will fit down the plug hole into the end of the vacuum cleaner hose, that will get anything out of the bore & don't use zip ties, a piece of twin & earth power cable is ok.
I use a 4mm bolt bent 1/2" right angle at the end & several layers of heat shrink to protect the valve seat.
It's much better to get the propper tool from Chacal, though.

+1 on Chacal's tool, I bought one and it took a few moments to understand how it works efficiently and then it's slicker than frogs eggs.

    Flawless...

it looks like its jammed in there pretty good. I tried for two hours and couldn't get it to budged....so i started taking the head off. figure i'll be able to get some pliers at it if i do that. think i'll invest in the proper tool and not do the zip tie thing again. on the plus side, after taking the camshafts off, the shims are a breaze to remove....lol
