    Hello all,

First post here. Been lurking some as I am reading up on things as I work on the XJ550 Maxim I got for my girlfriend to learn on.

I had it running quite nicely. Parked it, 3 hours later it went 3 miles and left me sitting. After it cooled and sat some more, it would run but surged alot. Then it quit.

I checked the coils and I have a very large (xxxx mega-ohms) between the outputs of the 2-3 coil. So I am thinking it is toasted.

Figuring I will replace both at once and be done with them. Where can I get replacements? Is there a replacement that I can just go to an auto parts house and get?

    Thanx,

    Matt

PM Chacal I am guessing he has what you need. He runs XJ4ever. The best place for parts for XJ bikes!

Do yourself (and us) a favour and use the signature part of your profile to put the the year model and size of your bike (I know you've alreasdy told us it's a 550), and also in your profile use the location part, so we know where you are, it could be to your advantage, and an XJ owner could be close to you, close enough to come and give you help.

Oh and welcome to the forum

It's not an "auto parts store" item. Your easiest best bet would be to scrounge a decent used set. OEM replacements are expensive; retrofitting to Dynas is completely do-able but does take a small bit of engineering to mount them.

About the one auto coil that would probably work directly is that from a Mazda Miata (earlier type - like '90 to '93). These coils have built-in igniters, and they are designed for a wasted spark system. Basically, you'd have to run 12V and ground to them, then rig a driver circuit from the TCI to drive the trigger input of the coil. This might be as simple as a pull-up resistor, or might require an inverter or even a zener diode.

Then you'd also have to make wires to go from the coils to the plugs.

Nice thing is that these coil packs can be had for $60 used on eBay, or probably even less from a UPullIt type junkyard.

OTOH, by the time you make the wire set, and interface them, the price of a new pair of Dynas, with mounting bracket from Len is not too bad.

Did you remove the resisted plug boots when testing the coil?
