so i recently removed the luggage rack that the PO had installed on my 82 Maxim 650. the rear turn signals had been mounted to this rack, rather than to the seat rail of the bike itself. in the process of remounting the turn signals, i damaged the hollow bolt seen in pictures below. this piece screws into the end of the turn signal and then attaches to the seat rail with nut and washer. it's hollow b/c the turn signal wiring needs to go through it.

any idea where I can find a replacement (am in Colorado)? Tried home depot, they had similar pieces but not the right size. i am going to try ACE today. I found a whole new turn signal lamp online at 5thgearparts, but would rather not pay $20 for what should be a $2 piece of hardware.

thanks in advance, all help appreciated!

throw a wtb ad up in the for sale section, perhaps someone is parting a bke out and has one that they dont care about.

but i have faith in ace, i have found the local hardware store to have pretty much every bolt i've needed. including my last need - the m6x20mm hex socket bolts to replace the stock phillips bolts to the ignition covers - in stainless too!

    Good luck!

if you can find out the right thread pitch/size, order from fastenal, they can get you ANYTHING. or just find it on the internet. but fastenal will literally be able to order you any fastener in the world, lol

So have you physically unscrewed the threaded part from the turn signal body already? I wasn't aware they were screwed in; on mine it appears that the rubber is molded to the end of it.

If it does actually unscrew as you report, then you're better off. You can take the part to a local machine shop and have them make you up one. They might have a bolt close enough in size to use as a starting point.

I doubt you'll find anything off the shelf that will match.

I didn't make it to ACE yesterday, so I'm still hoping they have what I need. Fastenal looks promising, but I don't even know what this kind of bolt is called at the moment, anyone know? And i have physically unscrewed the threaded part from turn signal body already, so if ACE does not have the right bolt then I'll have to go to a machine shop, or I might just buy a whole new turn signal for $25, then at least I'd get the bolt and have an extra lens.....

    Any other ideas are welcome!

Never seen a signal where that part is threaded....are you sure it isn't something the po did to mount them on the rack cause it sure looks like a 1/4" or 3/8" close nipple to me.

Be sure to browse the plumbing section at ACE, think you might just find it there.

whoa, out of a lamp, impressive!

not sure if the PO added this bolt or not, but how would the turn signal attach to the bike securely if that end piece were not threaded, since the threaded bolt screws into the turn signal on one side, is fed through a hole and fastened with a bolt on the other?

it just occurred to me, maybe I am mounting the turn signal incorrectly? if so, then I'm not sure how they mount. does anybody with a Maxim mind posting a close up picture of a rear turn signal mounted to their bike?

I just had mine off to move them back, and mine are the same way. Try your luck at the hardware store! If they don't have the part, you can at least identify the thread size. If you have a drill press, I wonder how hard it would be to drill the core out of a metric bolt? Then you could cut it off and you would have what you need.
