Need Suggestions: Maxim Rideability

    After purchase of a new(er) HD Sportster, I've realised a couple of things need improving on my '82 750 Maxim.
    1. Seat- the original seat begins to create an uncomfortable situation after about 45 minutes of riding. I think the foam may be too soft. My HD seat is very hard but remarkably comfortable after prolonged riding. Any ideas on making the stock Maxim seat more comfortable?
    2. Handle Bar Position: Whoever came up with the adjustable Max 750 bars had a great idea; mine just aren't comfy in the stock position. They tend to place my elbows too far into my ribcage direction. Has anyone had success replacing the stock adjustable bar with a more standard bar? What was involved?
    3. Those 1982-vintage brakes are just plain scary after riding a more modern bike. Any tips on creating more braking force (especially up front)?
    Other than that, I love having 2 bikes of different engine design.
    The Sportster is mean and torquey with a solid chassis- the Maxim is smooth and loves to rev.
    Now I need to convine Mrs. Wound that it's ok to have more than 1 motorcycle. Heck, it's even normal.

    1 i don't believe you said that :lol:

    2 i put CR high bars on mine, just get some risers from a seca
    the master cylinder might need to be replaced though

    3 new pads and fluid and a good bleed and i think you'll be pleasantly suprised

    tell the wife the yamaha is hers :)

    Kudos on your XJ, polock. I like the look of those bars. Are CR bars a brand name, or CR as in Honda CR model? How did you deal with your master cyl., or was that a non-issue?

    CR bend is just a style i guess you would call it, might be from a honda mx bike
    might be 30 different bends, i got the CR high because they were on sale
    let your wallet be your guide
    the master cylinder kind of gets a mean lean when you put it on flat bars
    it will work but it's not the best, maybe reduces brake fluid by 50% i'am looking on ebay for another
    the risers from the top triple tree to the bars are from a seca from ebay
    with some spacers to clear the center nut

    I'm with you on the seat needing to be re-thought for distance riding.

    The stock slope of the seat, forward to meet the tank, has you riding the tank after awhile.

    1. Had my seat custom stuffed, don't have any problems any more. New cushy seats have the gel-cell tech built in. Expensive upgrade but very comfy.
    2. No experience with this issue. Use ACH extenders to bring my stock bars back two inches, very nice.
    3. Upgrade to the 1100 master cylinder and braided stainless steel lines. REALLY tight setup!
