did you check for a burnt out bulb?
is your clutch safety switch installed and working? if you bypass the clutch safety switch by jumping it bike will start in gear on side stand
is your sidestand relay inplace and working?
is the black white wire on your tci connected

    what bike?

    edit
    removed light thought

sky blue wire runs up frame with the pickup coil harness

If grounding the wire didn't work then the problem is definitely upstream of the switch.
The light would be on and you would not be able to get the enigne to spin in gear with the clutch out if it were not bypassed.
Remove the seat, and the fuel tank. Start tracing that sky-blue wire back to the safety relay (and check that the realy is there and hasn't been bypassed).

does the relay click when you turn on the key?

there should be 3 wires there a black ground wire, a brown power 12 volt wire, and the sky blue wire
the black wire is for the turn signal lights
brown is power for neutral light and shared with tach and front brake switch

any 12 volt source will work to make light work you could test it with a wire with fuse from battery or run it back to the signal fuse thats where it comes from any ways

did you ground out the blue wire when voltage was applied to brown wire?

sky blue wire has a bullet connection under the seat in front of fender . the blue wire is part of the cable from pickup coils to tci unit the right connector

i found that bullet connection under the seat basicly the sky blue wire connects to a difernt coulor wire from the tci ...i connected a brown wire to the brown wire coming from bulb to to a brown wire screwed into the back of the tach i diddnt ground the blue wire ...i got a neutral switch on order i will wait for that i hate fidling with that thing once i get the new one i can install it and eliminate it as a problem

so basicly the po has potentialy grounded out the blue wire somewhere and disconnected power to the bulb....although when i had a fiddle with the blue wire running to the tci under the seat it wouldnt crank perhaps the bullet needs a clean and formin a ground there doesnt explain the light not coming on though

The neutral switches rarely fail, but they do get gummed up with sludge. It might just need a good cleaning, and you won't know that it's faulty until you can get the neutral light to come on by grounding the sky-blue wire, but not by putting the trans in neutral with the switch hooked up.

Also, we need to clear up the wiring color issue. Not all XJs use the exact same colors for the same circuits. Which year and model are we troubleshooting?

ok i connected the brown wire to the tach power got off my lazy ass and grounded the wire end at nsw the light came on ..this would mean if the nsw plunger was stuck in it would light all the time because it doesnt i amagine the plunger is warn down providing the plunger goes in not out not in on neutral

Run Seafoam or some other crankcase solvent to see if the switch frees up. Getting the switch out while the engine is in the frame is a huge ordeal.

Good deal. You can't get any socket in there without cutting it down to fit.

sky blue wire goes from neutral light to neutral switch it is ground for the bulb. Sky blue also goes to diode block from neutral switch supplying a ground for starter safety relay
    skyblue.PNG
relay in lower left is starter safety relay.
