Good evening all. I just got my '82 650 home.

Definitely some deferred maintenence I need to perform, I have read the Information Overload Hour. I already have a box of brake lines, shoes, etc from Len in the garage for the weekend.

Question for tonight: what the heck is this extra switch on the right handlebar? Kill switch is somehow disabled as well, so I need to dig into the system. Is this aftermarket?

    Thanks all for the help,

    Joel

That right-side control switch appears to be off a 750 Maxim or 750 Seca or something similar............you probably should pick up the correct switch for that bike, and you should also carefully inspect how that switch is wired into the main harness (as I don't think the connectors on the end of the switch are the same between your bike and other models............which may mean there is a surprise waiting for you down there).

Tha's not a 750 switchgear set (the aux light switch on the 750 is a mini-version of the kill switch).
Could it be a set from a market where the headlight was allowed to have a switch?

I don't know if that's a left side switch, didn't some older bikes have the headlight on/off switch there? Older XS did but not that style.

I thought that as well, but then wondered if someone would be able to modify one to fit the throttle tube and still have it work. That would take enough effort that I'd just pass and find a junkyard to pull any switch from.

I'm almost pleased that no one can figure out what this is yet!

I'll look for a right hand switch on fleaBay, or hit chacal up again.

Should this have the rotary kill switch?

If anyone has one laying around for sale, I'm interested.

The bigger question is what did they do to the harness to make that switch work?

Indeed. I can read a wiring diagram, and solder and terminate my way out of a paper bag, so I'm not too worried.

Luckily(?) the kill switch doesn't do anything, so I'm hoping for just a jumper.

I'm thinking someone just slammed that on to get a throttle and hooked up the starter switch only.

For your replacement, the 82/83 had the ground wire in the harness, earlier had the handlebar ground so try to find the 82 and up. Good new is they are quite plentiful on ebay etc. Chacal might even have new ones. Sometimes a new part is nice, bolt on and go without rebuilding.

Factory standard on the Pinto, kept your hands warm while pushing it.
