    Hi,
I'm pretty new to this site too, but here's my 2 cents:
If it's running decent, you might be able to get away with just a synch. If it's having some troubles, probably best to tear it down and clean 'em good. If you have enough patience I think anyone can do the job right. You just have to be willing to take the time required. No real special tools required other than a synch tool, and you can make one for $5. First thing to buy though is a good service manual, IMHO.

Cost me 300 bills for a cleaning and sync, they were pretty messed up and the guy that did it is a friend. Gave me a break on labor, also changed plugs and gave it a tip to stern safety check and an oil change just to be nice.

    WELCOME.

Is it an airhead or watercooled?
(the carbs are totally different, but do the same job)

A nice chrome exhaust system is HARD to find. You'll be tempted to put an aftermarket system on since you can get a new MAC system for about as much as you'll pay for a good stock system.
I've seen a nice exhaust go for $400 plus last year on Ebay.

DON'T DO the aftermarket...unless you wanna be trying to tune it for the rest of your life.... Ok, that's probably an exaduration but it can be difficult to say the least unless you have the right tools, patience, and knowledge.

Ebay is usually the best place to pick up parts. There are a lot listed for the XJ700 right now. Don't be afraid to throw the "buy it now" guys a lower offer. The worst they can say is NO and I've almost never gotten a no from any of them.

If she is running OK, you might be able to get away with a seafoam treatment to cut some of the crud out of the carbs but it's really no substitute for Richomatics "whole nine yards" cleaning. There are LOTs of threads about carb cleaning to search for and read through.
