Put the 1st 150 miles on my 1982 xj550r. Here is the list of problems:

I know it is running lean:

the intake boots are cracked on the outside, but further inspection confirmed that there are no leaks on the inside. the vacuum line off the petcock had a fairly severe leak near the upper nipple.
the plugs are a dull black around the outside and pretty much white on the inside. However, the plugs are not all the same.

    Engine knock:
i noticed that an engine knock had become loader than before. I have found the the #2 carb has a broken post in the the bowl (the post the holds the float). It still functioned and no loose parts were in the bowl (may have been the reason he sold it). I assume this is knocking the cylinders out of sync. I have done anything to the cam chain tensioner

The vacuum seal was not functioning properly when i stored it and the gas drained in the crankcase. the oil was changed for the 150 miles and is being changed as of now.

    any suggestions

There are two shop manuals that you will want to get. The Hayes and the Clymer.

Username "Chacal" has practically any part at a reasonable price, he may have the manuals too. You can fine CD downloads on e-bay, too.

Here is what I did to my bike:
    1. Fuel petcock replacement
    2. Carb rebuild.
    3. Intake boot replacement.
    4. Valve gapping
    5. Carb synch with YICS tool
    6. Pilot screw (air-fuel mix) with Colortune
    7. Riding and looking at sparkplugs for rich/lean mixture.
    8. Determined whether ignition coil was within specs, replaced it
    9. Spark plug cables and caps
    10. Determined whether diode block was working, replaced it.
    11. Replaced headlight relay.

Other than some mushy idle, everything is working fine.
