Ok, since I ended up tearing my bike down a bit further than I was originally planning, I'm starting to wonder if I should just clean it up and reassemble it from here, or if I should consider tearing it down further and painting the engine.

Since this bike has taken some noticeable damage from previous owners (see the cylinder head pic) that would be rather extensive to repair, it has me wondering if painting the engine would be worth the time and effort.

I am also trying to figure out what to do for a paint scheme for the bike though. While I like the Black Cherry color it is now, The PO had lost the right sidecover when he repainted the bike and now I have a mis-matched set and no more of that paint.

I'm thinking Schoolbus/Taxi Yellow with either some kind of black racing stripe or black and white checkered taxi stripe down the middle. I'm also looking into replacing that chromed Maxim fender by finding a painted Seca fender to extend the color scheme.

    Anyone have any more ideas?

too bad on the side cover - That color looks nice.

    ouch on the engine too!

I was just searching for information on painting over chrome before I looked at your posting. Have a look at the link below - maybe it'll save you from having to buy another fender.

I'd just grind them fins round on the edges and call it good. With that little bit broke off, it won't make much difference with cooling anyway. Then paint the engine flat black with BBQ paint. If you want it to look a little better, you can lightly sand the edges of the fins and polish them.

It's apart- - get an E-Bay 650 Maxim head, use your cams.

The Yamaha team racing colors of the 70's would have an "authentic" look if you want yellow and black. Look at an RZ400.

You can get the stripe packages for the '81 (red w/white/blk outlines) and the '82 (silver w/red & blk "flashes") you might consider using a stock striping kit over a different base color. Once I can get my hands on a striping kit for an '83 (scarlet/maroon) I plan to repaint my "spare" set of bodywork a dark charcoal metallic and use the stock '83 stripes.
