There's a number of things. Two come to mind immediately:
    1. Worn alternator brushes
    2. Deteriorated fuse box
If the price is right, you might have a good find there.

I'll tell you the Alternator looks OK; too.

But, what do I know? The ONLY way to know, for sure, is to take the Cover off the Alternator and visually inspect the length of the two Alternator Brushes.

I'd expect that they'd have to be worn down some, unless it was a Brand New Bike. Measure those Brushes. 10mm or less ... replace them.

Alternator Brushes are the one of the main causes for a Bike NOT charging the Battery.

The Fuse Panels on ALL XJ-Series Bikes are beyond service limit. Your best course of action ... Replace the WHOLE Fuse Panel with a modern one that accepts plastic fuses.

You'll be doing yourself and the Bike a big favor; as Fuse Panel woes are right up at the top of the list for things that make these Bikes fail to run or fail to run right!

Two major ones that I can think of:

    1. Prolonged periods of inactivity sitting on your backside looking at the pretty countryside flying by.

    2. Regular occurences of your significant other telling you to "stop spending so much damned time with that thing fer gawd's sake!".

    3. Motor runs backwards
    4. Hard as hell to hang on when twisting the throttle

    Xj-Bikes are hard to kill.

    If the Bike runs good:
    Replace the Fuse Panel
    Install an Inline Fuel Filter
Measure the Alternator Brushes ... and, ...
Keep the Battery Fluid Level up where it needs to be ...

Gas it up and ride it!
That's why they made it so good!
