I have been looking into a new headlight assembly (bucket, lense, light) for a couple reasons:
    1) Over the past couple years I have put on new bars, mirrors, grips, speedometer and tach, signal lights, and front fender, all of which are black. The only thing that sticks out now is the shiny chrome headlight.
    2) I don't ride at night very often, but when I do, the original light is pretty poor.

My main concerns are: Fitting all the wiring back into a new headlight and electrical issues involved in upgrading the light.

I would like to do as little re-wiring as possible (other than unclipping everything in the old headlight, and clipping back together in the new one). I also would like to keep all the wiring in the headlight, if possible. This means I will likely need a large, 7" headlight. I was thinking of getting those mounting brackets that clamp on the upper fork tubes, so it will need to be a side mount headlight.

Has anyone done something similar? Any suggestions on products to look at? Anything I should look out for / avoid?

Oh and I have been a member on this forum for a little over a year, but have never posted anything until today, so feel free to correct me if I'm doing something wrong.

    Thanks,

    Thanks XJ550H.

The bucket from Z1 still has a chrome trim ring though. I'm really after something all black. I suppose I could try painting it too...I have also seen trim rings for sale, but they are often pretty pricey, and I can't seem to find out what buckets they will fit on. Good idea on the LED bulbs though. I didn't know that was an option. I might order a few of them. Way cheaper than getting an LED headlight.

I managed to find a decent looking, reasonably priced headlight from Speedmoto (can't seem to post the link). It's a basic black bucket, 7" lense, 7.75" outside dia. H4 halogen bulb. Hopefully it has enough room to get all the wiring inside the bucket. And hopefully I don't regret getting the model with the wire mesh. I have heard the mesh can really affect the brightness of the light, but I'm sure it's still brighter than what I have, and I don't ride at night very often anyway. I figured I can always cut out the mesh....

That looks cool. Good price for an LED headlight too. I might try the LED bulb recommended by XJ550H. I was mostly interested in a black bucket to go with the blacked out theme I've been working on, as I rarely ride at night anyway. I've had a lot of positive comments so far, including an older guy who said "that yamaha is a lot newer than my old virago". I said, "I doubt it, it's an '83". He was shocked. Made me smile anyway....
