So Hi folks I'm new here and have just been browsing the info we have here on the forums. I recently purchased a 1985 XJ700n Maxim, in bright metallic orange color. This is my first motorcycle. Have been eager to ride but went through a MSF rider course to be smart and then got really busy at work so shes been sitting in the garage waiting for maintenance. I'm checking for rear shoe delamination when I change my rear tire this week. Plan on replacing shoes and pads asap. After the routine fluid changes and safety checks I have a bigger issue. The cleaning of the carbs (eek). The bike starts every time but will shut off as soon as you turn off the choke, even if sufficiently warm. Have yet to run the bike with no choke. Also, there is a pretty steady leak from my petcock, looks like old seals. I think i will be replacing said petcock with the aftermarket on/off valve from xj4ever. Any experience with those? This looks to be a great place to learn about my new bike, I'm glad I'm finally getting started. :D

Welcome to the site. There's a wealth of information here and a great bunch of folks who hang out here and who are willing to walk you through problems.

welcome to site. valve clearences should be on that list. Looks your off to a great start. good work on the brake check, +1.
the after market on off is fine just cap off the vac port that used to operate the petcock. Thats what I did and no problems to report

Thank you. Oh yeah I will have to put the valves on my list. I was mainly looking at the fuel valve because of price, but I will be sad to see the vacuum function go. Winter will be a good time to get this stuff done. I plan to have a nicely tuned bike by spring so Ill have my hands full. :)
