I joined your site because my friend just bought an 83 XJ 550 Maxim and I'm going to help him get it road-worthy. The main problem it has is that the shift lever doesn't return to the center after you put it in gear. I assume this is caused by the horse-shoe shaped spring that shows on the parts diagram.

My question is, do you have to take the engine apart to replace that spring and, if not, where is it, behind the clutch or behind the counter-shaft sprocket?

Thanks for your answers and I know I'll have many more in the future.

The pedal centering spring is right behind the cover where the shift shaft is. Take it off and you'll see it.

    No, it's not. It's a 550. It's behind the clutch.

With the bike on the sidestand (so the oil is out of the way) you can see it with a flashlight and an inspection mirror; to gain access you'll need to remove the clutch.

The 550 clutch has a few "eccentricities" that need to be paid close attention to when reassembling; see: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html

Be sure the shifter shaft isn't bent and binding; and be sure to fit a new tab washer when reinstalling the clutch.
