Hey guys, I just picked up a 1992 XJ600 Seca II with only 8600 miles on it. It runs great, but the starter motor sounds like something has gone to hell. It doesn't skip or slip, it does its job but it makes LOTS of mechanical racket while its doing its job. I read up on the failure of the starter gears, so I pulled my starter out and checked all the teeth that I possibly could with an inspection mirror; I found no damaged teeth, bent teeth, or missing teeth. One thing I did note however, the gear that directly contacts the starter.... it would spin freely for maybe half a rotation, then freeze up. The only way I could get it to budge was to put the bike in gear and rock the bike back and forth. This would point to a bad starter clutch, right? I don't plan to split the entire engine just for a bad starter clutch(stupid design on Yamaha's part IMO.....), what is the worst that could happen?

I dumped the oil the PO had in it and put in some fresh 15w40 Rotella NON-SYN, but I left the petcock on prime and now there is fuel in my new Rotella, so that was a wasted $20. Which brings me to my next point... the vacuum nipple on the petcock is just..... GONE. The port is there, but for some reason the nipple is missing, that's why I had to run it on prime, and I didn't think fuel could travel UPHILL overnight.

Any place I could get a replacement... nipple? If not, would anyone happen to have a spare petcock that is rubbish? I only need the back plate where the nipple is.

I'll try and get a video of the starter noise by tomorrow
