New Piston Rings

    I finally got my new piston rings for the bike, the second cylinder threw a ring which was what was causing the bike to burn oil, the top ring was completey gone and the piston wall and ring gland was completely mangled, the bore was completly untouched. My questions is which slot does the ring with the chamfered edges go into, the first or second. I forgot to look before I removed the old rings. Its for the XJ750.

    I haven't installed rings in quite a while, so wait for others to post in case somethings have changed. Most compression rings are marked with either a dot or the word "top". So the dot goes up. Some are not marked but only compression rings have beveled edges and the beveled edge goes up. In the sets I have installed both compression rings would be beveled so I am not sure but would assume that the top ring should be the beveled one if both are not beveled.
    Also be certain to check the ring end gap and file to the correct gap measurement. If one is too wide a gap try it on another cylinder. And don't forget to stagger the end gaps on the piston 120 degrees. This keeps two gaps from matching up and leaking compression or allowing too much oil up on the piston.

    Did you take measurements to see why a ring failed? If the bore is out of spec you'll break the new ring too.

    Yep, got out the digital micrometer and all the bores are well within spec.

    chamfered edges? In my class, we learned that compression rings have a slight chamfer on the edge that faces the piston (not the cylinder walls). This is to improve the seal when going through compression by forcing the rings to move outward. These would go on the top grove in the piston. On the other hand, oil scraper rings have chamferred edges as well, but it is on the edge that faces the cylinder walls. These would go on the last grove.
