With gas prices going through the roof as they are nowadays ive decided to get a bike and get a license partially for fuel economy. I was looking at all kinds of bikes and stumbled across an 81 xj650 for 1300. The guy said he rebuilt the motor and such and it sounded and looked good so I bought it for 950. Well 180 dollars later and a week gone by I begin to look closer at it and see the yics thing on the valve cover. Now ive done a little research and ive read that yics only came on the late 82 and onwards maxim 650s. So my question to you is what exactly is going on here. Serial num says its an 81 and matches the title. Whats the possibility of the PO or someone else along the line swapping motors. Its a nicer bike in pretty decent shape but I just wanna know more about what could have happened.

Look at the serial number on the engine. If it doesn't match the frame its been swapped.

If I remember correctly the engine serial number is stamped on a flat on the engine case, right side, above the oil fill more or less.
