    Hi

    Just bought an XJ550 1983.
But i have an electrical challenge..

The previous owner dismounted the original handlebar switches, so he could replace them with new ones, non-original.
But i can’t figure out to connect them to the mainwiring on the bike..

I really really hope there is soneone who can guide me in the right direction

    Thank’s in advance

    Kind regards
    Lars from Denmark

the connector for the throttle side is located aside of the right ignition coil.
it is a black connector . has 2 red wires maybe stripped white this is the kill/run switch
also a blue striped wire which runs from solinoid to starter button
there is no black wire (ground) in the harness wire connector as the metal shell grounds to handle bars . the ignition coil mounting bolts make a good ground point

with your new switch the kill wire and power to kill wire should connect to red wires

power of start would go to blue wire and you want to test through the start wire as this would be ground in the starter button. . just want to make sure of which is ground

ok, i'll have a go for you, though i am not familliar with the 550, but going from the pictures you have supplied,-----------
so we are looking at the wires for the R.H. handlebar switch only ,for now
so both Red /White wires are the kill switch Loop
so one of the Red/White wires goes to the blue connector of the new switch
the other Red/White wire goes to the yellow connector of the new switch

the light blue wire (in the harness in your hand) goes to the starter switch, Black/White wire
the Orange wire from the new handlebar switch ,goes to earth, to ground out the starter circuit, i think on the original switch the ground was through the handlebars, but you can just ground the orange wire anywhere convenient.
the black wire in the new switch, it states, is for a gear indicator, which your 550 wont have.

the other wires in the harness in your hand should be --------
Red /yellow is feed to main light switch
Dark Blue is feed out of main light switch to High/Low switch
which is now, on the new L/H switch

cant find a Blue/Black wire on your diagram, but on other xjs that wire is the feed out to the High /Low switch

    WOW!
You guys are the best! :-D
It works, the starter turns and the engine cranks! Tomorrow I'll fix the fuelhoses etc. and then hopefully get the engine running.

I'm very happy and thankful :)

It's alive! :-D Thank you so much!
Perhaps, if you are able to help me with the wiring on the left handlebar -I will post some pictures of the main wiring/handlebarwiring tomorrow? :)

Looks like you're going to need some mudguards (fenders in US) too or things will get messy quickly - not to mention front forks like to be braced.
