Hey folks. Got 2 new tires to mount on my '85 Maxim 700. Starting with the rear tire, what's the process? Looks pretty straight forward but read somewhere you have to release or remove the brakes. Heard that of the front but want to get this rear done first.

not too familiar with a Maxim 700 but looking at pictures on google ,it looks like your rear brake is a drum brake and not a disc, if so , just unscrew the brake pull rod at the rear thread, undo the brake drum tension arm, then the axle , and roll the wheel out the back,
before you start , if you need some ground clearance at the rear mudgard, raise the centre stand on some wooden packing pieces.
if its a disc rear brake ,you will need to remove the caliper from the securing bracket, put a piece of wood between the brake pads ,to stop them closing up accidentally.
then axle, and roll out the back
