So I'm new to the forum and have had my 85 XJ700N for about a month now. Wasn't running when I got it and was missing the air box, but I rebuilt and jetted the carb and it runs like a scalded dog now with pods and straight pipes. The clutch safety switch was ripped apart so I jumpered it for now but every now and then the weirdest thing happens.
When starting the bike cold, in neutral, the starter button doesn't engage the starter. No matter how many times you press it, the solenoid doesn't click on. However, if you honk the horn a couple times and try again, the darn thing clicks right over.

I'm no rookie at wiring and I've looked over the diagram at least twenty times, and I can't figure out how the two are possibly related. The only thing I can come up with is maybe the voltage drop of honking the horn somehow helps something in the starter relay pop over???

I plan on completely rewiring the bike when I get the new handlebars and controls, but until then, has anybody seen this before?

Next time that happens, lay a screwdiriver or coin across the two large bolts on the starer relay. What happens then?

You may just need to clean the contacts for the starter button.

It did it again today. I didn't read your reply until just now so I will have to get back on the results of that but Today I opened the headlight and found the connector for the right controls and popped the fluke in the pins and the switch seems to be working fine. I'm getting open and very little resistance between when the switch is pressed vs not pressed. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the starter safety relay stuff.

My original hypothesis being that when I honk the horn without the bike running, the slight voltage drop may help jiggle something loose in the relay. I don't know how to test that other than jumper bypassing the safety relay
