new to me 1982 750 maxim display thing

    I would say start by checking your brake fluid level, if that is fine, drain the fluid , and with the engine running, move the white float in side the master cylinder, the warning light is suppose to notify you that your brake fluid is low. if this doesn't fix the problem, start by checking all the wires/conectors for the wire. this has nothing to do with the actual brake system, just the fluid level. if the fluid is okay, your brakes will work fine. also this is for the front break only, as the rear is controled by a bar attached to the foot break.

    With my bike, I always get the batt warning, as with the new batteries, the sensor doesn't always read the current in cell 3 so it comes on at some times letting me know the water level is low, even after I just check and fill it.
