    Hello All.

I am new to the Maxim world and likely will be bugging all of you here in the future. I have been on and owned bikes since I was a kid. I have had a Briggs powered minibike, 74 CL360 dressed as a CB360, a 76 cb360, 78 Vespa Piaggio Bravo moped, a 78 Kawasaki 400 (can't remember the model. 2cyl Air cooled twin roadbike), 86 VT500C Shadow, 90 BMW K100LT. I used to run around on a buddy's farm with him. He has a couple of old Bultaco dirtbikes.

I had been without a bike for about a year and a half before realizing that I just like having a bike. I am tall and have had knee surgery, so crotch rockets and Rebels were out of the question. I was trying to find either a full dress tourer or a large cruiser, but my wife did not want me to spend much money. It so happened that my soon to be Step Father-in-law had a 82 Maxim 650 and an extra parts bike that is about 70% there. He had titles for both. He was riding the one right on up until a few months ago. He had owned the bike since 1990. It has 50K on the odometer. To put it on the road, I need to get a battery, fix the kickstand that I broke while unloading the bike of the truck, and likely put a new Dunlop on the rear.

I will admit not being thrilled at first about the idea of this bike. After talking to some local shops, they were all unaminous in their positive opinions of the Maxim. I figured for the %00 I spent, that if I hated the bike, I can get the money back out of it. I haven't had a ride yet, so the verdict is still out.

My idea is to ride the together bike while taking the parts bike down to the frame. I would like to end up with a Maxim that looks like it could be 1982 again.

I would like to thank you all ahead of time for your help. I will have questions along the way.

    Sincerely - David

Welcome to the forum. :) I'm new to the Maxim myself. ONLY gripe I have is that it's physically a tad small for me. I look like a gorilla on a rollerskate. LOL

That is my fear. I will ride it and me knee wil start whining about it. The parts bike has the engine Guards on it. I think I may move them to the riding bike and put a set of highway pegs on her.

Welcome to the forum keep us posted on your rebuild. I had a lot of fun cleaning mine up and getting it close to factory.

Highway pegs FTW! On long rides there's no beating them.

    Welcome to the forum!

    Gamuru,

I noticed your wife rides too. That is pretty cool. I have/am trying to get my wife to learn, but she says she has a problem with being able to see the highway rush along below her. She says she wouldn't mind a scooter cause se can't see underneath as well. Is it just me or does her statement make no sense. With the scooters being step through, I would see more on the scooter......

It may be motion sickness. Some people have trouble with it. My wife had to get contacts to ride as her astigmatism messes with her when wearing glasses inside her helmet.
