new to xj and issues with bike

    i just picked up a 82 xj 1100 and its my first bike. i love it but there are a few problems that i need some insight into. the biggest is the transmission. third gear pops out under any acceleration and is useless...second does this only past 6k and under hard acceleration . new parts are expensive. i found a guy selling a 85 1100 tranny for a good price. are the parts the same?

    Welcome aboard you are going to love the power an torque of the 1100. I am not sure if the 85 gear sets will work in the 82. I do know the XS1100 gears sets will work. I have seen both the XJ and the XS gears on ebay for good prices.

    I plan on tearing it apart in a bit so buying a good used tranny sounds better and much cheaper than buying the parts i will need. yeah i love the torque. she needs some TLC but yesterday i was messing around with a buddy on his 81 650 and he couldnt keep up with me to save his life ...afterwards i checked my air filter and its TERRIBLE! ill replace that asap but it does smell of gas :(
