New Used 82 Maxim 650

    I just bought a 82 Maxim 650 and after about 100 miles in 2 days I LOVE IT!

    Can anyone give me some info on how this bike should be running and sounding if it's in good condition though? I think it runs fine since it barely tops out at 5000rpm at abt 60mph but it does have a slight whine to it when I am accelerating. I don't notice it so much at high speed but then the wind is whipping by pretty good then too. Also kinda clunky through 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd gear sometimes.

    Also, complete newbie rider question but, what should the tach be reading (average) at the various speeds. I want to make sure I'm not contributing to any future problems.

    Add some Berrymens Chem Tool to the Tank......get it at most auto parts stores $2 something a can.
    If that don't clean it out you'll have to do a real good job of cleaning the carbs but I woud have new bowl gaskets and some carburator cleaner ready,,,,,,,,try not to move any adjusting screws and have a air compressor to blow out parts and passageways.(ALL OF THEM) and believe some are hard to find.( and use a new phillips driver for them float bowls).
    BUT Don't mess with carbs unless your real handy at it.

    Welcome to you Yamahamama! You've fallen into the same groove as the rest of us.
    I'll say this for Berrymann's Chemtool, 1/4 a can to a full tank of high test every 6 months and I never had to tear my carbs apart again! The whine you hear is probably the hypoid gear in the rear end. It makes a distinct sound that doesn't sound like any other bike. I hope you changed the rear end oil when you got the bike. You never know what is going on in there until you check the fluids.
    Clunking in the first gear or two is normal but it should smooth out into third, check that you are using the correct weight oil in the sump.

    Try Autozone,Pep Boys,or most any auto parts store.just call them first.
    you may also want some better spark plugs(.032 gap for iridium type) and synthetic gear and engine oil 10/40 grade. make sure it's Motorcycle Oil ONLY.

    Thanks Lion! I would also suggest Napa, Chief's, Shucks (CSK), just about any autoparts store will have it. As for oil, you can use anything that satisfies the SJ API rating, just be sure to avoid any oil that has the "energy conserving" badge on it. These have friction modifiers that play havoc with our clutch linings, leading to slipping clutch problems. For more on what types of oil are compatable with our bikes, you should refer to the owner's manual or a good maintenance manual. The SJ rating has been superceded a few times since the printing of my manual but it is still the standard that you should use to determine what will work correctly in your bike. Both Penzoil and Castrol have been very generous with their time when I asked about motorcycle use and proper ratings for my Maxim. I personally use Castrol GTX 20-50 on all of my bikes with solid performance and protection. There are folks here that will swear that you can't use automobile motor oil in a bike. This just isn't true. The only difference between the oils for cars and bikes is the additives and friction modifiers blended into the package. The lubricative properties your bike needs are satisfied by selecting the correct API rating I mention earlier. I would suggest you do a little research and ask the folks that make the stuff to the specifications of the machines. They will know what works and what doesn't.

    Roger that on The Castrol GTX.....that oil is good enough for the high reving bikes as it's racing oil for cars with all the added protection needed for high RPM's, and clutch friendly as you stated above.

    I used to use it in my Z-28 small block(302cid) back in the 60's in my motor head days..LOL .I'm 58 now and was told years ago from an old mechanic also of the pureness of Pennsylvania crude oils.....does Kendall,Wolfs Head or PennsOil make a racing oil that you know of these days ROBERT?
