So I did some searching and couldnt find the exact answer I was looking for.

Does anyone know the part number for the fram filter for an 85 XJ700N? I was hoping to be able to get it or if anyone knows another that will work from Autzone.

Also, I am in California where its mostly hot which weight oil should I use?

Thanks and sorry if this is a repeat.

    FRAM # CH6003 (with the 2 "O" rings)

    WIX # 24934

    PUROLATOR #ML 16803

    Then there's XJ4EVER

I'm in Florida, where it's mostly hot, and after reading a few oil threads and related material on the Net, I'll never buy an oil with a "10" as the first number again, as the oil wears out and breaks down to this "base" number, and even the "10" will break down some.

I've read every oil thread on this site, and it turns out that a wide selection of oils available today are better than what was on the shelf in 1981.

Avoid ALL automotive oils, as they ALL seem to have some sort of "Friction Modifier" that will soak into your clutch. That narrows your choices to motorcycle-specific and "diesel" oils.

For my 900 I blend AmsOil Synthetic 20W50 (1Quart) and Shell Rotella-T 15W40 (Dino, the rest) as that bike's starter clutch can't handle 100% synthetic. I save my drainage for the work truck.

+1 on the filters, I like the FRAM because it comes with the o-rings.

Any good motorcycle spec 20W50 will be fine; Castrol 4T is widely available. In hot weather, stick to a 20W-basis oil.

I agree that it's a good idea to avoid full synthetics, even those for motorcycles; however I don't know that' I'd be blending my own "semi-synth."

I've been running Castrol's ACT>EVO X-Tra 4T Semi Synthetic "for high revving 4-cylinder motors" in one of my 550s for a couple of seasons now with good results; I'd "recommend" it but it's not all that economical and kind of hard to find.

    A K&N KN-144 may work for you.
