Just bought a ‘97 XJ900 Divvy to “recommission”…..its tatty to say the least, done 86k & looks it.
I’m retired & like nothing more than bringing something old & tatty back to life.
First question please, do I have an oil pressure light or do I have an oil level light.
Rode the Divvy home no problems, but, there’s no oil light when you turn the ignition on which I thought there would be. Your views very much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, congrats on the 900! You will have all kinds of fun with her.

I too just got one this past spring. I too had the oil pressure light issue and even removed the swx and cleaned it to make sure all was good. I think the only time the oil light sould come on is when you push the starter button and before the bike starts. That is the only time mine comes on. If no oil pressure, the light will come on and stay on.

Down under the shift lever there is a very small wire with a connector. You can check the ckt there to see if the light come on your dash. After I removed and cleaned my swx I did the test just to make sure.

What is your background with bikes and wrenching?

Again, welcome to the forum, there will many folks commenting and welcoming you soon. Great bunch here and so much information.

Here is the link to my thread that has some pics and might help you out.

Welcome. First mistake, your xj900 is a diversion? Diversions were never sold in the US, and this is an American forum, so don't expect much guidance, but you will get some confusion sometimes.
The 900F (pre diversion), as @Timbox points out has a level switch in the sump. The Divvy? No idea, maybe someone here will know, but my suggestion is always to get a wkshop manual and get to know the bikes wiring diagram.
Fingers crossed though, you may get an answer.
